At WESTWOOD EYE DOCTORS, we provide comprehensive eye exams. Our eye exams include vision assessments, tailoring our prescription solutions to achieve comfortable vision for distance, near, intermediate and specific occupational vision distances as required for each individual patient. The comprehensive eye exam also includes a thorough evaluation of your eye health by our optometrists. Our optometrists will take time to discuss your eye health and treatment options.
For adults who are 19-64 years old, we recommend having your eyes examined every two years, or in the case of contact lens wearers, once a year. If any eye health issues are detected, our optometrists will discuss your options with you to determine the best course of action and will monitor your condition more closely.
Children's eye exams are used to assess eye health, myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, amblyopia (lazy eye), and strabismus (eye turns).
At WESTWOOD EYE DOCTORS, children who are 18 years old and under are covered by Medical Services Plan for annual eye exams with presentation of a valid BC Health Care card. We recommend that children be examined on a yearly basis to detect early on in their development, vision disorders that can affect their ability to see, to function, and to develop normally. We highly recommend that your child be seen for their first eye exam between the ages of 6-12 months. This initial appointment is used as a baseline exam and helps detect any issues early on.
WESTWOOD EYE DOCTORS is proud to partner with the Eye See Eye Learn program which provides enrolled kindergarten-age children a one time FREE pair of prescription glasses after attending an eye exam at our clinic.
As you age, your vision and eye health changes. The risk of eye health conditions, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, increases as you get older. Often if the changes are detected in the early stages, treatment can begin before any permanent damage has been done. For adults aged 65 and older, our optometrists recommend yearly eye examinations. If any issues are detected, our optometrists will discuss your treatment options and will recommend monitoring your condition more closely.
We believe that early diagnosis of ocular disease such as glaucoma, cataract, retinal tear and detachment, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and corneal dry eye disease is essential to better manage and to limit progression of these conditions.
Treatment and management is prescribed conventionally and holistically at WESTWOOD EYE DOCTORS not only for best outcomes, but also to prevent and minimize future recurrences.
Timely and appropriate referrals for specialist intervention are scheduled when serious ocular disease is diagnosed.
We provide high-definition retinal imaging to detect eye disease earlier, and to more accurately monitor the progression of disease such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.
With retinal imaging, we are able to detect eye health changes by comparing side by side retinal images, from past to present. With the retinal imaging, our optometrists are also better able to explain your eye health and provide quality eye care treatment options.
We are equipped to take high-definition cross-sectional profiles of the retina to detect retinal cysts, macular edema, and wet macular degeneration in the early stages for early referral and treatment for prevention of these sight-damaging conditions. OCT scanning also allows us to digitally dimension the optic nerve and nerve fibres to detect diagnose and manage glaucoma in its early stages.
It is not only how sharply your eyes see that matters. The way your eyes' muscle systems work together as a pair is also important for comfort.
We assess your eyes for horizontal and vertical alignment, strabismus, stereopsis, fusion, eye tracking accuracy and binocular eye strain to ensure that your extraocular muscle systems function properly on a physical as well as a neurological level and to recommend and provide treatment and management if required.
We specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of perceptual-developmental disorders causing learning and reading disabilities, dyslexia, ADD, ADHD and developmental coordination disorders. Since our inception in 1981, we have garnered extensive experience in diagnosing and treating many specialty cases with great success.
We combine conventional and holistic approaches with detailed pre- and post-op management to minimize and to eliminate delayed healing or other corneal complications. Our experience spanning over twenty years of refractive surgery management allows us to enjoy consistently optimal outcomes. We review all ocular parameters in detail before we give our approval to proceed with laser surgery. We are involved in advanced procedures which include cross-linking PRK for the management of keratoconus and other corneal collagen disease.
Using effective and intuitive approaches to address underlying systemic and ocular conditions, we are able to achieve significant and lasting improvements for dry eye.
Our clinic provides comprehensive colour vision testing for specialized fields such as in firefighting, law enforcement, military defence, motor vehicle licensing, train and railway work, the aviation environment and metallurgical testing.
With specialized pediatric tests, we are able to measure the colour vision of children who are too young to respond to conventional colour vision tests.
And with our background in the genetics of colour vision, we can counsel you and your family members on any questions you may have on the inheritance of colour vision abnormalities.
At WESTWOOD EYE DOCTORS, contact lens specifications are determined by a Doctor of Optometry for clear, comfortable vision and longterm eyelid and corneal health and safety.
We provide conventional, disposable, high oxygen silicone-hydrogel disposable and daily disposable contact lenses. We also specialize in toric/astigmatism, rigid gas-permeable, alternating or monovision and multifocal contact lenses.
Contact Lens Pricing
In addition to our contact lens fits being doctor-determined for health and safety, our contact lens pricing is equal to or lower than that of the big box stores and online retailers!
Our clinic is equipped to perform the most sensitive blue-yellow as well as the conventional white-white computerized visual field analyses of optic nerve function to detect, quantify and manage early visual field loss such as would occur in glaucoma, and to detect and quantify other optic nerve pathway disorders such as would occur in optic neuritis, multiple sclerosis and pituitary tumour.
To enhance athletic confidence and performance, excellent visual-motor coordination is essential. Fast reaction times, accurate reaction responses, superb central and peripheral vision, and excellent bilateral visual-motor coordination are important elements of the visual-motor system. These elements can be measured and trained to enhance athletic confidence and performance.
Latisse is an FDA approved treatment (2008) to grow eyelashes for people with inadequate eye lash length and/or volume. It is also known as bimatoprost, a glaucoma drug (brand name Lumigan, manufacturer Allergan, Inc.),which has been in use since 2001. With the use of brimatoprost, eye doctors and glaucoma patients noticed a hair growth side effect, with longer, lusher eyelashes appearing over time, usually within 2 months of use.
Before we prescribe Latisse as an eye lash growth treatment, we first set out to identify any eye lid disease or other ocular disease as an underlying cause of poor lid health and insufficient lash growth. For example, in meibomian gland disease, dry eye disease, persistent or recurrent conjunctival infection or Demodex infections, eye lid health is commonly compromised and eye lash growth reduced leading to thin and sparse lashes. It is important that these disease conditions be identified and addressed adequately before proceeding with lash enhancement treatments.
Furthermore, for the health and safety of the eyes, we emphasize that patients adhere to the published guidelines and be aware of the precautions associated with the use of Latisse. We recommend having the eyes examined before and after starting treatment. We ask patients to report any changes in iris colour, deepening of colour in the skin around their eyes, inflammation, or any other eye or vision changes they might experience.
LATISSE® is an FDA-approved treatment to grow eyelashes for people with inadequate or not enough lashes.
